Introduction

PictureArchangel Gabriel's "La Route Provençale" (c) 2022 C Lysette
In the past three decades of reading for clients, I have met beautiful souls from all walks of life. Every spring, I think of my clients and students blessed with green thumbs, and I wonder how you all are getting along with the season just around the corner.

I also can't help but to remember how much my mother loved this time of year.

The garden back at the old family home was my mother's pride and joy. I remember being dragged to the garden nursery every spring and being relegated to pushing a shopping cart full of seedling starter trays, heavy bags of soil and fertilizer, and new gardening tools. Flower pots, garden spikes, watering cans, trellises. The list seemed never-ending. This was my mother's passion. It was her escape from the mundane.

Springtime couldn't come quickly enough for Mom. The season always began with tulips and Easter lilies, but from there, it all seemed, to my novice mind, a chaotic but majestic whirlwind of vibrant color welcoming the sun and warmer weather. Having watched Mom go through her annual planting ritual most of my life, I know that her fellow green thumbs are out there right now, scouting for ideas and inspiration. And while I must admit that her green genes hadn't been passed along to me--houseplants fear me!--I can, at the very least, take a peek into the angelic mansions for you to see what the angels have growing in their gardens.

If you're looking to draw a particular angel's energy into your garden space this spring, I lovingly write this three-part blog for you!

A Word on Angelic Mansions

PictureArchangel Cassiel's Black Wolf Temple (c) 2022 C Lysette
I talk about angelic mansions in all my books. I've even covered them on this blog several times, so my summary of them here will be brief.

An angelic mansion is where the source of an angel dwells. Think of it as an angel's personal space in Heaven, a space which arose from divine decree. The Creator encouraged her first children, her first creations--the angels--to create their own worlds. The command was for each angel to create as the Creator creates and make a world to each angel's liking or taste. At this point, the angels had seen countless worlds and watched humans create wonders. Now, it was the angels' turn.

At first, many of the angels were clueless as to how or where to start. They were angels, messengers, stewards of the cosmos--essentially babysitters to humanity. They hadn't exactly done much in the way of creating, but it didn't take long for them to figure it out.

Requiring no further instruction from the Creator other than, "Go create," Archangel Cassiel was the first to break off from the angelic body to go construct one of the very first angelic mansions. In Heaven, everything is made of light. Cassiel, however, remembered a time when light hadn't yet existed. As much of the angelic body--including the two eldest, Michael and Helel--Cassiel was born before light. He remembered darkness, but at this point in Creation, darkness had been relegated to human dreamworlds. The former Angel of Kings now become Angel of Sorrow longed for the comfort of night, of shadows, and that's what he created in his mansion--a world of darkness.  And he wouldn't be the only angel to do this, Archangel Uriel, Angel of Armageddon, lights his mansion only by the fire of erupting volcanoes. Archangel Raphael, Angel of Healing, locks his mansion at dusk with the amber glow of a setting sun just below an indigo and magenta horizon.

Archangel Michael, firstborn and Prince of Heaven, was initially hesitant about this whole "go build a diorama" assignment, but in his mansion you will find bright blue and sunny skies crowning a shimmering, golden desert that spans as far as the eye can see. Archangel Gabriel, Angel of Annunciation, also loves the blue, sunny skies, but they prefer a more moderate climate--warm, breezy, Mediterranean.

With the now countless angelic mansions peppered across an infinite Heaven, no two are identical, and each is representative of the angel's individual style, which we humans constantly pull inspiration from. These majestic venues are wonders to behold. They are entire worlds unto themselves where souls are always welcomed to visit, lodge, explore, and so much more. I encourage you all, in your next meditation, to visit a few.

But until then, I've paid a visit to the mansions of our resident archangels here at Atlantean Glow to see which spring flowers, if any, were blooming. Below is a short list of popular springtime plants that I was able find.

Better Angel Mansions and Gardens Pt. I

If you've grown an herb or vegetable garden, then allium flowers should look familiar. Allium gives us garlic, onion, chives and leeks. Common associations with allium are prosperity and abundance. I can see why; they tend to be easy to propagate. They also are associated with luck and good fortune--even the most novice of gardeners can get a bountiful harvest of allium without much effort.

Angelic Mansions:
Haniel and Jophiel love cooking for humans, so finding their mansions on this list shouldn't come as a surprise. Immanuel's mansion has allium in abundance because Mary Number One enjoys making meals for small, intimate gatherings at her cottage. And Raphael keeps the plant in his mansion for herbal tinctures and spell-work.

Aquilegia is so named for the appearance of eagle talons atop vibrant blooms. Despite the base of the flower's name ("aquila") literally meaning "eagle," I didn't spot these flowers in Archangel Michael's mansion. The eagle is one of Michael's icons, yet the flower didn't pop up during my cursory inspection. That's not to say the flower isn't in the prince's mansion, it just isn't anywhere obvious or in seeming abundance.

Angelic Mansions:
Also known as Granny's Bonnet and Columbine, aquilegia can be found dotted around Haniel's mansion. Patron of the American Southwest and the Rocky Mountains, the angel keeps it on-hand in the vast pantry of his ranch house as a "special ingredient."  Archangels Chamuel and Raphael, co-patrons of Native America, grow the flower in abundance, as its nectar is favored by hummingbirds, garden bees and various types of moths.

Asian Bleeding Heart is a unique and fascinating flower that comes with a lot of lore and mythology. But no matter which culture's story you choose, chances are it's not going end with a "happily ever after."

Because of its striking appearance, the Bleeding Heart has in the past been mostly associated with unrequited love. Tales of jilted or rejected lovers resorting to the unthinkable to mitigate the pain of a broken heart seem to follow this flower. But it also seems that in the age of the internet, minds and hearts are beginning to change and instead view the flower as a symbol of romance, enduring love, passion and strength.

Angelic Mansions:
Though it seems as though Archangel Cassiel's mansion is eternally locked at autumn, I have spotted quite a few of these springtime blooms in palace courtyards, as well as in his gardens surrounding pagodas. Archangel Sandalphon has these flowers strung on one of his steam riverboats. He also has them hanging over the walkways into one of several orchestra halls. In Archangel Uriel's mansion, you'll find these swaying 'neath the many ancient Roman arcades flanking guest lodging.

Hold on, Chantel. What about Helel's infinite desert?
Yes, I know Helel's mansion can seem foreboding for some. It's a vast desert where souls in need of healing go for a temporary retreat. But Helel has meticulously placed a few tiny oases about for the more adventurous and enduring souls. And it's in these finite dots of color, swimming in that endless sea of gray, that you'll find these flowers in abundance.

Bergenia's beautiful clustered blooms are cradled by unusually large green leaves. These leaves lend to one of the perennial's other monikers, "elephant ears."

Angelic Mansions:
Fairies love Bergenia. In Archangel Raphael's mansion, where many fae clans live, Bergenia provides the perfect ground cover for wee ones to hide and keep to their surreptitious adventuring.  In Archangel Cassiel's mansion, baby cloud serpents will dive beneath the foliage for a quiet, undisturbed nap. But regardless of the fantastical creature that may take refuge beneath those gigantic leaves, this plant may only provide a false sense of security since disturbances below may cause the blooms atop its tall stalks to shimmy and sway.

In my spiritual travels, I have visited Archangel Chamuel's mansion several times. The Angel of Creation is a steward of nature--both flora and fauna. In his mansion you will find lush forests and scenic mountain ranges. In between are gardens--endless gardens--all of which are connected by an infinite meditation labyrinth. Chamuel is also an Angel of Mindfulness. He teaches countless modes of meditation, as well as calming, restorative exercises. If you visit, you can expect to find him in one of his many Zen gardens, where you will also find sprawling Bergenia in full bloom.

Lastly, in Archangel Raziel's mansion, you'll find windswept sand dunes swirling along an infinite, undulating desert. Unlike Michael's mansion where the sun never sets, and Cassiel's mansion where the sun never rises, Raziel's creation cycles between day and night. In this desert, the archangel has erected monolithic data repositories that would make the Library of Alexandria envious. And within these ornate structures, adorned with intricate mosaics and calligraphy, the Bergenia line the shadowy corridors, assuring visitors that they are safe and welcomed.

The Camellia is a favored ornamental that can hold its own against any rose when it comes to symbolizing love and adoration. The hearty plant is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, where it is called tsubaki. It is associated with beauty, vitality and strength.

Angelic Mansions:
The bold statement blooms of the Camellia are one of Jophiel's favorite. The archangel loves flowers that make their presence known. Not only will you find the pink, red, white and yellow Camellia throughout Jophiel's many gardens, but you'll also find the flowers attached to her angel robes or adorned in her hair.

Both Archangels Cassiel and Uriel display the deep red Camellia in their armories to remind visiting human souls of their own strength and resilience throughout their many incarnations.

Archangel Gabriel, who may as well be considered the Angel of Tea for their immeasurable repository of tea blends, treasures the Camellia for its delicate, herbaceous flavor. The white blooms also meld seamlessly into their mansion's motif. Gold, white and blue. Ionic columns. Chaise longues. Billowy, spring gardens. High teas. Yes, the Camellia fits in just fine here.

Clematis Armandii is a climbing evergreen with snowy white blooms. It's named for Father Armand David, a nineteenth-century Jesuit missionary priest and botanist who traveled to China to study its flora and fauna.

Like most of the flowers on this list, the Clematis, or Climbing Clematis, attracts our garden friends, the pollinators--bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Its flowers evoke a sense of peace, serenity and purity. Perhaps if you've the space (and the walls) to allow this plant to flourish, you can transform your garden into a tranquil space perfect for reflection and meditation.

Angelic Mansions:
Archangel Chamuel allows the climbing plant to "go wherever it wishes." Trees, trellises, temple walls, you name it, the Clematis is not a shy plant at all. It's a hugger, and I've seen it wrapped around lamp posts, courtyard columns, doors, balustrades. It seems at home with the Angel of Mindfulness, where it tends to become one with everything it encounters.

Archangel Gabriel's mansion is locked at eternal spring. Soft floral breezes rustling through the gardens resplendent with pastels create a dreamy, surreal experience. But regardless of whether you're stopping by for high tea in one of the many lake gazebos or visiting with friends to work on life scripts in the mansion's libraries, you're going to run into the Clematis wrapping itself around the Ionic columns and greeting visitors strolling through the stoae.

Parts of Immanuel's mansion enjoys all seasons, and in the early spring, cozy little cottages, where both resting souls and the Climbing Clematis call home, burst into vibrant tufts of white and pink. Villages look as if they lost the biggest pillow fight known to humans. The lush evergreen vines give way to soft pink and white blooms that seem to swallow the tiny cottages whole. But the resident souls don't seem to mind.

Everybody and their mother seem to love the crocus! This flower is in just about every garden-themed mansion I've visited, and also in places I never thought to find it. Then again, as it is in Heaven, so it shall be on Earth. That's to say, if you're an admirer of spring gardens, then you know the crocus pops up at the annual flower shows with its vibrant, colorful flowers coveted by just about everyone who's not swayed by the saffron spice perk.

We can thank the Ancient Egyptians for making the crocus so popular--they loved saffron. Derived from the crocus, saffron wasn't just used as a tea or spice, but as a fragrance and a dye, as well. Throughout history, humans have chased after this little springtime flower for both its beauty and its utility. Today, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world with a few grams costing the equivalent of a decent ribeye steak, or two large coffees at your local, overpriced (and overrated) coffee shop.

Ever in high demand, saffron is no joke here on Earth. In Heaven, however, it's abundant with each angel favoring its varied qualities.

Angelic Mansions:
Cassiel and Gabriel are both tea connoisseurs, and so the saffron is the draw for them. The same can be said for Jophiel and Haniel, who enjoy cooking. It's all about the spice. Well, not all. Jophiel will never turn down those bright, beautiful blooms!

For Chamuel, Immanuel, and Zadkiel, the crocus is another reminder that spring has arrived, and you'll find the clustered blooms in all their bold colors throughout the respective mansions.

Meanwhile, Michael utilizes the saffron for incense in living quarters, common areas and temples. And Raphael seems to embrace the entire plant, preferring the purple and indigo flowers for his gardens, as well as the spice for tea, incense, spell-work, and gifts for his resident fae folk.

Over all, the crocus seems to be a favorite among the angels. There's not many places you'll go in Heaven without running into the flower. Of course, this also means you can bring a little slice of Heaven to your garden. Associated with resurrection, rebirth and new beginnings, the crocus is a majestic addition to your spring lineup.

Michael & The Gang

Archangels Helel and Michael Helel and Michael's "war" was more of a heated discussion. Considering that archangels weren't equipped with emotions, "heated" was a pretty big deal, so it makes sense that humans would blow the whole creation story out of proportion. --"Twins Michael and Helel" (c) 2023 C. Lysette & R. G. Breus
In The Beginning
According to Judeo-Christian mythology, Lucifer fell to Earth after being defeated by Archangel Michael. The naughty angel, said to be consumed by pride and desire for the divine throne, landed on a blackberry bush. He cursed it, spat on it, stomped it with his hooves, and then urinated on it to show his utter disdain for the prickly bramble. In all, that fateful October 11th was a no good, very bad day for who would become God's archnemesis and humanity's fall guy for all eternity.

Early Christians loved this story so much, they decided to deem Lucifer's eviction from Heaven a holy day. To add salt to the fallen angel's wounds, the Christians named this holy day of October 11 “Michael’s Mass.” But when the first European countries made the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, Michael’s Mass--now "Michaelmas"--was moved up from October 11 to September 29, and European Christians still celebrate it to this day.

Dancing On The Head Of A Pin
But if you give just one angel his holy day, all the other angels are gonna start huffing and complaining. Thunder starts rumbling, lightning starts streaking, a village goes up in flames, and then nobody’s happy. Gabriel and Raphael were lucky enough, as they had stellar public relations with the humans. The two angels would be awarded their own feast days in the spring and autumn, respectively. Alongside Michael, that's only three angels, though, and we all know there’s a hell of a lot more angels than that, pardon my language.
